Friday’s championship Class 1-A football game was NOT a pretty sight for the unbeaten Van Meter Bulldogs.
Van Meter allowed a West Lyon touchdown early in the first quarter and then tied the score at 7-7 on the first play of the second quarter.
And then the wheels fell. There were a couple of bad snaps, a safety and fumble recovery for a TD, all for the Wildcats of West Lyon.
West Lyon scored three unanswered second-quarter TDs and a safety en route to a 50-14 victory.
Van Meter scored on the opening play of the second quarter, and then didn’t score again until early in the fourth quarter as the Bulldogs capped a 12-1 season, finishing as the Class 1-A runner-up.
It was the second time that West Lyon and Van Meter had tangled. The Bulldogs won the first encounter, but the Wildcats prevailed this time. The two teams met at the UNI-Dome both times.
Van Meter is 36-2 over the past three seasons.

The Bulldogs’ all-time playoff record fell to 25-17. Van Meter is now 1-1 all-time in the finals.

West Lyon snapped Van Meter’s 12-game winning streak. The streak ends tied for the second longest in school history.
Van Meter was held to 236 yards of total offense, the lowest mark in the last three seasons.
Van Meter’s 11 first downs were the least by the Bulldogs in the previous five seasons.
West Lyon’s 50 points were the most allowed by the Bulldogs in a game since the first game of the 2015 regular season, and the most allowed in a playoff game since 2010. West Lyon scored a full 40 percent of the total points given up by the Bulldogs this season.
West Lyon’s 413 yards total offense were the most given up by the Bulldogs since 2016, while the Wildcats’ 322 yards were the most by a Van Meter opponent since the 2015 season opener.
West Lyon’s 21 first downs were the most allowed by the Bulldogs since Western Christian’s 25 first downs in the 2016 semiﬁnal game.
The Wildcats averaged 8.1 yards per play, the most by a Bulldog opponent since 2015.
The Bulldogs were on the wrong end of a running clock for the first time since the 2014 season.
Van Meter never led in the game. The last time the Bulldogs never held the lead in a game was in the 2016 semiﬁnal against Western Christian of Hull.
The Van Meter defense forced at least one fumble in six consecutive games, including one against West Lyon.
Senior Blade Koons’ 80-yard punt on a free kick set a new Van Meter record, tying the ninth-longest punt in state football history.
