This weekend’s Winterset Gary Christensen Invitational wrestling tournament promises to gather not only wrestlers, but wrestling fans from across the state.

Wrestlers from 18 schools – Class 1-A, Class 2-A and Class 3-A – will be in Winterset Saturday.

Schools participating in the tournament include: ADM of Adel; Clarinda; Clarke of Osceola; CB Jefferson; Eagle Grove, East Union; Interstate 35 of Truro; Martensdale-St. Marys; Osage, Oskaloosa, Sigourney-Keota, Southeast Warren, Underwood, Urbandale, Van Meter/Earlham, Waukee, Woodward-Granger, and of course, host Winterset.

Only Clarke, CB Jefferson, Oskaloosa and Urbandale (strange but true) do not have any top ten wrestlers likely to compete.

Of the dozens of athletes competing at the Coach C Invite, several dozen are rated wrestlers, and many of those are seniors.

There are 35 ranked wrestlers who will likely participate, if they are healthy.

Class 2-A Osage has six ranked wrestlers, while Class 1-A Underwood also has six rated wrestlers.

There will be three top-ranked wrestlers on Saturday, at 106 pounds,  132 pounds, and 220 pounds. Two of those wrestlers – Winterset’s Bryce Hatten and Woodward-Granger’s Cody Fisher – are Class 2-A seniors, while Gabe  Porter of Class 1-A underwood is a freshman.
