Martensdale-St. Marys is returning to eight-man football this fall after a dozen years one class up, in Class A.

The Blue Devils are .247 in the past 12 seasons while the football team has been in Class A, with a 27-82 combined record since 2008.

Prior to that, Martensdale played eight-player football.

The Blue Devils will be graduating 10 seniors this year, and have seven juniors coming up the ranks, as well  as six sophomores and two freshmen.

Martensdale was 2-2 in district play in the five-member Class A, District 8 this past season, and 0-5 in district play in 2018, when the district was comprised of Lynnville-Sully, Central Decatur, Wayne of Corydon, Grand View Christian, North Mahaska and Martensdale.

District 8 lost Grand View Christian this past season, when Grand View Christian discontinued football for a year.

Grand View Christian, however, will be playing eight-player football this fall, in District 6, along with the Blue Devils.

Both Martensdale and Grand View Christian will be  members of eight-team, eight player District 6 this fall.

Other teams in the eight-man district include Lamoni, Melcher-Dallas, Mormon Trail of Garden Grove, Murray, Seymour and Southeast Warren.

Wayne of Corydon will stay in Class A District 8, while both Lynnville-Sully and North Mahaska have been switched to Class A District 7.

There are 68 teams across eight-man football in eight districts this fall. Five of the districts are nine-team districts, while the other three will be eight-man districts.
