Last week coach Will Baumann brought his knowledge and skills to the Winterset High School volleyball team. Coach Baumann has been a head volleyball coach in the state of Iowa for the last 14 years. He was Kalie Shult’s high school coach.

During his coaching career his teams have appeared at the Iowa State tournament 10 times and recorded 6 state championship titles. “Championship Approach”, was established to raise the level of volleyball for teams and athletes across the State of Iowa.

Coach Baumann runs a hands on camp with one on one mentoring.  When a guest coach takes the floor and knows the players by name, you know you have someone special. He is on the floor and part of the action every minute of every camp day. Baumann not only demonstrates the correct technique for the skill at hand, but then takes the time to discuss the physics of the skill. He highlights the results of a bad approach angle, poor posture, distance from the net, lack of visual contact with the ball and a host of other results. Camp is certainly not a vacation! The girls are focused and working hard for four hours each day.

Watching Coach Baumann for a couple of hours was an educational experience for the volleyball challenged. His technique and communication with the team members along with his understanding of the game and the physics that create winning teams was fascinating. “Championship Approach” was a first class experience for the Huskies volleyball team.
