As many as 30,000 people could roll through town when RAGBRAI visits Winterset on Monday, July 22, 2019. A committee of about 30 Winterset citizens, including city workers, administration, law enforcement and local business members, has been meeting weekly since March to plan the event, but are asking for the community to lend a hand in order to help the event run smoothly. Nearly 500 volunteers are needed for a variety of tasks, including directing traffic, answering questions, monitoring the campgrounds and working the beverage garden. Volunteers can sign up to help on the Winterset RAGBRAI website, and choose which tasks and what times they are interested in. A volunteer meeting and sign making party is planned for Tuesday, July 16. Here, volunteers will find out when and where they will be working during RAGBRAI and pick up their volunteer T-shirt.
In addition, Winterset has received nearly 150 requests for housing from riders. Riders are looking for anything from green space on lawns to a spare bedroom – and everything in-between. Host volunteers can choose how much of their home they’d like to open up to the riders and they will be matched with riders who are looking for the same thing. The Winterset RAGBRAI housing committee will handle the placement and the initial communications between groups. The goal of the committee is to place as many riders with hosts as possible.
RAGBRAI will be a great way to showcase the pride, kindness and community spirit Winterset citizens have. If you are interested in volunteering in either of these ways, please visit the Winterset RAGBRAI website or call the chamber at 462-1185.
