School board and city council elections
One of the reforms that we passed in the legislature was to combine school board and city council elections. This year both elections will be held on Nov 5. Voters in Warren County will also be voting on a supplemental bond to fund the new courthouse after the bids received for the project exceeded the amount originally approved by the voters.
Besides saving money by having one election instead of two, we believe there will be more voters in both the school board election and city council election when compared to the number of voters in two separate elections. Turnout in both elections has been low in the past. Please educate yourself on the stands of the candidates and then vote.
Does voter fraud exist?
When we were debating the Voter ID law in the legislature, we were told that there were no cases of voter fraud in Iowa. Opponents of Voter ID laws around the nation make the same claim. The Heritage Foundation has just released a study showing that there are cases of voter fraud, both here in Iowa and nationally. According to the study, there were 25 cases of voter fraud resulting in convictions in Iowa, since the year 2000. There were 1,217 cases nationally, resulting in more than 1,000 criminal convictions and 48 civil penalties. The frauds include ineligible voting, duplicate voting, absentee ballot fraud and fraud in registering. Of course, we do not know how many cases there were that were not discovered. Hopefully the voter ID law that we passed in the legislature will reduce the cases here in Iowa.
