Ruby Irene Cooper Hendrickson passed away June 24, 2020. She was born July 28, 1923, in Clarke County, the daughter of Perry Edward and Lily Ferne Cooper. She married Elias Anthony (Tony) Hendrickson on Nov. 21, 1942.
Ruby graduated from Lorimor School and earned a teaching certificate in 1941. She taught in three different country schools until she married. Tony had basic training in Anniston, Ala., where she worked in a tank factory until he was shipped overseas for World War II. She returned to Winterset and worked in a grocery store. When the war ended, she and Tony started a family and Ruby was a homemaker raising four children. Ruby went to work for the Winterset Community Schools in the food service department in 1973. She later became the Director of the Food Services until she retired at the age of 84. She was a favorite of many school children.
She was constantly in motion and loved gardening. She also enjoyed reading, playing cards, and collecting chickens.
She was preceded in death by her husband, E.A. Tony Hendrickson; parents; brothers, HM (Miles) Cooper and Edward Cooper; sister, Virginia Silliman Leslie; infant son, Gary Edward Hendrickson; and grandson, Nathan Lee Horn.
She is survived by her children: Beverly (Richard) Horn of Carrollton, Ga., Betty Hendrickson, Barbara (Mark) Tunell, and Jim Hendrickson of Winterset. She has four grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren: Justin Horn, Emily Horn (Dan) Fincham-Elias and Owen; Grant (Alexis) Tunell-Ainsley and Adley; and Samantha Tunell (Evan) Hollingsworth and Ty, Vera, Tess, and Max. She also had many loving nieces and nephews.
