Olive Catherine Kerns was born Jan. 14, 1921, on a farm south of Creston. She was the daughter of Walter Alvin Kerns and Mary Caroline (Wiesseman) Kerns. She lived in the Creston area until August 2015 when her family moved her to Coppell, Texas.
She attended school for 12 years and graduated from Zion High School 1938.
Olive never married or had children. She was a homemaker and helped her brother, Wayne, manage the farm near Macksburg, Iowa.
Olive was a member of the Jerusalem United Methodist Church where she was an organist, taught Sunday School, and provided flowers from her garden for the worship center every Sunday.
Olive spent a lifetime being a horticulturist. She was a member of Lincoln Neighbor’s Club, a 50+ year member of the Afton Federated Garden Club, and a Master Flower Show Judge. She served on the Federation’s State Board in several capacities and acted as a mentor for newer judges and garden club members.
Olive enjoyed gardening and flower judging at the county and state fairs. She read and studied constantly from her library, tried new plants each year, hybridized and crossbred iris. Other interests included sewing her own clothes and embroidery. Her favorite birds were the cardinal and peacock.
Olive is survived by nephews, Robert (Hiromi) of Corta Madera, Calif., Tom of Coppell, Texas, and Donald (Valarie) of Coppell, Texas; and niece, Susan of Port Ludlow, Wash.
