Winterset High School’s Student Council received two awards at Monday’s Iowa Student Leadership Conference. One was the honor council award, and the other was State Service Project of the Year for their work on the Veteran’s Ball earlier this year.

According to the Iowa Association of Student Councils (IASC) web site, an honor council award is “designed to recognize Student Councils who present evidence of having an effective and progressive council organization in a variety of areas.” An application is sent to the IASC for review.

This year, Winterset High School was one of 10 student councils to be recognized.

The second award, the State Service Project of the Year, was awarded for the council’s help in planning the Veterans’ Ball, which was held to honor the 100th anniversary of the American Legion Hall in Winterset. The money raised during the ball is currently being used to renovate the hall. The reason why Winterset received the award was due to the collaboration with the legion, local businesses and community service groups. Over $30,000 was raised. It really did take a village to make this event happen.
