Last Thursday night, the Winterset High School Marching Huskies held their annual Ice Cream on the Square performance. The tradition of the event is to show the public what the band will have in store for their fall season.
This year’s marching band theme is entitled “From Russia, With Love” after the James Bond movie of the same title. The first movement includes pieces from the James Bond theme song. Woven in with the action packed music, is lines from the classic Russian ballet “Swan Lake”.
Throughout the whole music set, pieces from various famous Russian music are used in collaboration with each other. The second piece is a mix between “The Nutcracker” and “Romeo and Juliet”. With a mellophone feature in the beginning, the rest of the band will move into clusters then halt. All of the mellophones will be presented around the 50-yard line.
The third movement, Tchaikovsky’s “Symphony No. 4”, is a percussion piece. The final song is “Pictures at an Exhibition”.
During the Huskies’ five-day marching band camp, they managed to have the full first and half of the second movements on the field. Winterset High School band director Lucas Petersen exclaimed multiple times how this has been his best band camp since taking over as director at Winterset three years ago.
This year’s drum majors include Brad LaGrange, Morgan Wickman and Josie Burkett. The three are charged with the task of keeping the band in time throughout the show.
The band will perform during halftime at home football games, as well as at several fall competitions.
