The art of quilting gained popularity in millions of homes in the U.S. and abroad thanks to Liz Porter and Marianne Fons of Winterset.
Their passion for quilting led to teaching a beginning quilt class locally, in the mid-1970s, at the ISU Extension office on the local town square. Since then, their career exploded into writing best-selling books, teaching and lecturing nationally, to hosting a how-to program (Fons & Porter’s Love of Quilting) nationwide on public television. In 1999, they began publishing what has become one of the most popular quilting magazines in the world, Fons & Porters Love of Quilting.
In honor of these two hometown legends, the Iowa Quilt Museum in Winterset will display their favorite works in an exhibit opening on Oct. 1 and running through Jan. 5, 2020. Additionally, a series of events are planned on Oct. 3-4 while the two quilters are in town.
