Clad in their bright green neon shirts, 32 Winterset area children boarded the school bus on Thursday, Aug. 8, to travel to Des Moines to participate in the Zoo with the Blue event.

Organized by Winterset dispatcher Betsy Snyder, this event allows kids to spend a day with local law enforcement at the Des Moines Zoo.

Observing all the animals the zoo has to offer, Snyder said the group had an amazing time. Along with the children 17 adult chaperones got to spend time at the zoo. A lunch was provided by Anything Sweet & More Cafe, and the group’s T-shirts were provided by Jones Creek Apparel.

A few children experienced a lot of firsts on the trip. For one little girl, it was her first time visiting the zoo. Snyder observed her smiling the entire time. It was another first for two little girls who had never ridden the school bus before. They had so much fun riding along and acting like the big kids for a day.

The third annual event, Snyder is excited to share the experience with another group of children as they Zoo with the Blue.

The next community activity with local law enforcement will be Shop with a Cop in December. Last year 10 children went Christmas shopping through the program. Shop with a Cop and Zoo with the Blue are completely funded by community donations.

Snyder extends a “big big thank you” to the community for supporting the programs.
