As summer begins and the need for blood rises, LifeServe Blood Center is asking community members to book an appointment to give blood at an upcoming area blood drive.

To help ensure the safety of blood donors and team members during this COVID-19 pandemic, LifeServe is enforcing several precautionary measures. Appointments are required. Donors who do not have an appointment will not be able to give blood. Blood donors should pre-screen themselves for fever prior to appointments. Only donors with temperatures under 99.5 will be allowed to donate. Blood donors are required to wear a mask for the duration of their appointment. Donors who do not have masks will be provided with one.

The community of Winterset will have a blood drive available by appointment only on Tuesday, June 23, from 2-7 p.m. at St. Paul Lutheran Church (1120 N 8th Ave.). Appointments are required, and donors may schedule their appointment online at lifeservebloodcenter.org or call 800-287-4903.

From the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic to now, more than 500 blood drives have been forced to cancel, resulting in the loss of more than 13,000 blood donations. To put things in perspective: a single trauma victim can use fifty units or more during their critical time of need.

“Due to social distancing, many of the schools and businesses that hosted blood drives are now working remotely or disallowing visitors,” explained Reilly Cady, Director of Field Recruitment at LifeServe Blood Center. “While understandable, that’s a big problem for the community blood supply. We’re asking groups that have never hosted a drive or have adequate space available to consider giving a blood drive a try!”

As hospitals and medical centers ramp back up on elective surgeries and summer begins, the need for blood is rising. Prior to COVID-19, LifeServe Blood Center collected 70 percent of all blood products for local hospitals on bloodmobiles or at inside set-up blood drives in communities across Iowa, South Dakota and Nebraska.

Local businesses and organizations can assist by hosting a blood drive at their location. LifeServe Blood Center has several enhanced COVID-19 precautions in place to ensure the safety of our team members, blood donors, and venues.
