A 62-year-old Winterset woman was discovered dead in her home last Thursday as firefighters responded to a fire call on the city’s near south side.

The fire was reported by a neighbor who had been working outside.  There were no smoke detectors in the home.

While on the scene extinguishing flames, which took less than five minutes, fire crews discovered the body of Jolene Ann Baker of Winterset. Baker’s husband was not home at the time of the blaze. Firefighters received a call around 7 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 29.

Cause of the fire is unknown. There was massive damage near the front entryway and adjacent windows. Baker’s body was found about 15 feet from the doorway, sitting on a couch.

The State Fire Marshall’s office has been called to help with the investigation.

Her body was burned, but no cause of death is available.
