Winterset Tree Commission was positioned on the west side of City Hall Saturday, for their yearly tree giveaway. Residents who signed up on a first come, first served basis could pick a free hardwood tree for planting.

Historically the Commission which was created six years ago by the Winterset City Council, who supports their efforts to obtain an Arbor Day Foundation designation as a Tree City, USA. Their goal is to improve and maintain vital city trees.

This initiative included the development of a five-year conservation plan providing steps to maintain a

healthy tree canopy by replacing any dead or dying trees with a variety of large hardwood trees, and assist in the management of the emerald ash borer infestations.

Almost every spring up to 60 hardwood trees are distributed by the commission to Winterset residents for planting, which accomplishes their goals. This program offers a great opportunity to celebrate the importance of an urban tree canopy and improve care of these vital city trees.

Members of the 2020 tree commission include; Chairman Kevin Johnson and Eric Pugh, Frances Main, Eric Holland and Pam Deichmann.
